Asks Vigilance Officer to Go ‘Easy’ On Cousin
Chennai: The Tamil Nadu government was hit by yet another phone-tapping controversy on Monday — a conversation involving a minister asking a vigilance officer to go “easy” on a relative facing corruption charges was revealed to the media. Social Welfare Minister Poongothai Aladi Aruna confirmed that the voice on the tape was hers, but said she was just inquiring about the status of the case and not pressurising the officer. The incident has come barely a few weeks after a similar incident involving a telephone conversation between the chief secretary and the same vigilance officer rocked the administration. The conversation between Poongothai and director of vigilance and anticorruption S K Upadhyay, pertaining to a pending probe against her relative, was disclosed in the form of an audio CD by Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy. He told a press conference here that Poongothai had spoken to Upadhyay to get the case against her relative, an assistant electrical engineer, diluted and sent back to the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) for ordinary disciplinary proceedings rather than criminal prosecution. “He’s actually my appa’s own sister’s son, my first cousin...if things has (sic) to be done, please go ahead. But at least make sure it is not very intense,” the voice on the tape is heard saying. Jawahar had been suspended after being caught accepting a bribe. As he was a relative of Poongothai, she tried to help him by speaking to Upadhyay, said Swamy. When contacted, Poongothai told TOI that she spoke to Upadhyay only to know the status of the case. “As a minister, I speak to officials everyday and it is part of my job. Jawahar is my relative and I wanted to know the status of the case. I’ve not done anything wrong and I have nothing to worry,” she said. Admitting that she had spoken to the DVAC chief twice about four months ago, the minister said she had not attempted to interfere with the case. “I just wanted to know the procedure being followed. As a political person, people approach me seeking help. But I’ve never tried to help anyone who had charges against him,” she added. Asked whether she was admitting that the voice in the tape was hers, Poongothai said, “You want me to deny it? "I am not like other politicians to deny that it is not my voice.” The Minister is telling how other Ministers will behave if they got in a episode.
There is no gambling like Politics.
